What is the difference in video quality HDMI DVD player progressive scan versus Player?

I have a high-definition television definition and the search for a new DVD player. How image quality in a DVD player with progressive scan compare one of the new HDMI DVD players? Does HDMI produce near HD quality? Is it worth the extra $ 100-200 for the player and the special cable? Thank you!
