Do you have years of memories trapped on a 16mm film that you would love to watch once again. At one time, 16mm projectors were very common and easy to find as they were popular among those who enjoyed creating home movies. Over the years as technology has advanced these projectors fell out of favor with many people and they moved on to using other technology. Even today there's something special about watching movies on a 16mm projector that brings back so many memories of great times that have long since past.
16mm projectors date back to the days of the Great Depression when silent movies were the big attraction. Early companies like Eastman Kodak and Bell & Howell started building these projectors early on and soon became the largest players in the industry. Silent movies only required a projector that would operate at about 16 or 18 feet per second, but as sound was introduced, it required projectors that would operate at at least 24 feet per second.
In the 1970's 16mm projectors most often used tubular lamps which were sometimes also called “Mazda lamp”. These large lamps were almost 6 inches tall and were often somewhere around 750 watts. After these lamps, tungsten-halogen lamps became the standard and they were welcomed because of their efficiency. With a Tungsten lamp one could easily have only a 250 watt lamp and it would be brighter than a 750 watt of the previous tubular lamps. When it comes to reel size, 16mm projectors usually hold from 2000 feet all the way up to large, 6000 foot reels, but these are most often reserved for professionals.
Finding a good used 16mm Projector has become easier in the past decade thanks to the internet and website like eBay. Prior to the advent of the internet 16mm projectors had become quite rare and locating one to play some of your old home movies was difficult. Most people would visit flea markets, second hand stores and yard sales in hopes of finding a used projector and finding parts for repairs was also hard. It seemed that this unique form of watching movies had all but passed away except among the die-hard collectors and enthusiasts. When the internet and most importantly, eBay came along, it gave people a new medium to sell some of their old goods. With that came selling 16mm projectors that sat in the attic for many years and were in new condition. Today 16mm projectors are hot collectors items, but are also in demand from people who still have some old movies laying around.
If you want to watch your old movies once again but don't have a projector any longer, there's good news and it's as close as a mouse click away. Visit eBay or other websites that sell used items and you will find yourself a great deal on a used 16mm Projector that will give you the ability to go back in time and enjoy those old home movies!
